Facility Transfer
A facility transfer is when an incarcerated person is moved from one correctional facility to another. Transfers can be within the same system such as from one state prison to another, or between systems such as from county jail to state prison. Communication accounts and balances may or may not transfer depending on whether the new facility uses the same provider. Families should always verify the new facility and provider before funding new accounts.
What Is Facility Transfer?
Facility transfers are common in the correctional system and happen for many reasons including reclassification, programming needs, facility overcrowding, or disciplinary reasons. When a transfer occurs, families often experience a period of no communication while the inmate is processed at the new facility.
The most important step after a transfer is confirmed is to find out whether the new facility uses the same communication provider. If the provider changes, existing account balances may not transfer. Contact the original provider about refund options and set up new accounts with the new provider as quickly as possible.
