Classification
Classification is the process by which a correctional system assigns an inmate to a specific security level and facility based on their offense, criminal history, behavior, and other factors. Classification determines whether someone is housed at minimum, medium, or maximum security. The classification level affects communication privileges, visitation rules, and which specific facility the person is assigned to.
What Is Classification?
When someone enters the state or federal prison system, they go through a classification process at a reception or diagnostic center. Evaluators assess the nature of the offense, the length of the sentence, prior criminal history, and behavioral risk factors to determine the appropriate security level.
Classification is not permanent. Inmates can be reclassified up or down based on behavior during incarceration. Good behavior over time can result in a lower security classification and potentially a transfer to a less restrictive facility closer to family.
