Oklahoma State Penitentiary

Oklahoma State Penitentiary is a maximum-security state prison operated by the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, located in McAlester in Pittsburg County in southeastern Oklahoma, roughly 110 miles southeast of Oklahoma City. Founded in 1908, it is the oldest prison in Oklahoma and serves as the state's primary maximum-security institution, housing Oklahoma's death row and some of the state's most serious and long-serving offenders. McAlester is a small city in the southeastern part of the state, and the prison is a significant part of the local economy.

Communication at Oklahoma State Penitentiary follows Oklahoma DOC provider contracts. JPay handles electronic messaging, photo sharing, and money transfers. Families create a JPay account and add the inmate using their Oklahoma DOC number to begin correspondence. GTL manages phone calls and video visitation under the ODOC statewide contract. Death row inmates may face more restrictive communication rules than the general maximum-security population. Families whose loved one is on Oklahoma's death row should confirm current communication access directly with the facility.

McAlester's location about 110 miles from Oklahoma City means the facility is accessible by car but is not a short trip. In-person visits require advance approval through the Oklahoma DOC visitor application process. For families outside southeastern Oklahoma, JPay messaging and GTL video visits are the most practical options for regular contact. Because ODOC uses JPay and GTL system-wide, accounts set up for OSP will work at any other Oklahoma DOC facility if an inmate is transferred.
