Holman Correctional Facility

Holman Correctional Facility is a maximum-security state prison operated by the Alabama Department of Corrections, located in Escambia County in the southern part of Alabama, near the town of Atmore, roughly 60 miles north of Pensacola, Florida, and about 80 miles northeast of Mobile. The facility opened in 1969 and serves as the site of Alabama's death row and execution chamber. Like many Southern maximum-security prisons, Holman has been the subject of significant litigation and reform efforts over the years related to conditions and staffing. It is one of the most significant correctional institutions in Alabama both historically and in terms of the serious population it houses.
