Texas Inmate Communication Overview
Texas operates one of the largest state prison systems in the United States through the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). All phone calls at TDCJ facilities are handled through Securus Technologies using the AdvanceConnect prepaid account system. Before you can receive calls, your phone number must be registered through the Texas Friends and Family Registration system at texasprisonphone.com. Registration and Securus account setup are two separate steps. Both must be completed before calls can connect.
Effective December 1, 2025, a funded AdvanceConnect account is required to pay for all TDCJ phone calls. Families who previously received calls without a funded account must now create and fund an AdvanceConnect account at securustech.net or through the Securus Mobile app. As a transition measure, each registered phone number receives one free 60-second call per month if no funded account is associated. Call Securus 24-hour Customer Care at 972-734-1111 for account setup assistance.
All personal mail to TDCJ inmates must be sent to the Digital Mail Processing Center rather than directly to the facility. Include the inmate full name and TDCJ number on every piece of mail. E-messages can be sent to all TDCJ inmates through the Securus e-messaging system. Video visits through Securus are available at select TDCJ facilities, last 60 minutes, cost $10, and are limited to one remote visit per month per inmate.
How do I register to receive calls from a Texas TDCJ prison?
You must complete two separate steps. First, register your phone number at texasprisonphone.com through the Texas Friends and Family Registration system. Second, create and fund a Securus AdvanceConnect account at securustech.net. Both steps must be completed before calls can connect. Do not contact Securus before your Texas Friends and Family registration is confirmed.
What changed about TDCJ phone calls after December 2025?
Effective December 1, 2025, a funded AdvanceConnect prepaid account is now required to pay for all TDCJ phone calls. Families who previously received calls on collect or without a prepaid account must now set up and fund an AdvanceConnect account. Each unregistered number receives one free 60-second call per month as a transition measure. Contact Securus at 972-734-1111 for help.
What is the most common mistake Texas prison families make?
Calling Securus before completing the Texas Friends and Family Registration is the most common mistake. Securus cannot help you until your phone number is successfully registered through the TDCJ system at texasprisonphone.com. Complete the registration first, receive your confirmation, and then contact Securus to set up your AdvanceConnect account.
