Iowa State Penitentiary

Iowa State Penitentiary is Iowa's only maximum-security state prison, operated by the Iowa Department of Corrections and located in Fort Madison in Lee County in the far southeastern corner of the state, on a bluff above the Mississippi River. Established in 1839, it is one of the oldest continuously operating prisons in the United States and Iowa's oldest correctional institution. The facility houses the state's most serious long-term offenders and Iowa's death row population.
