Colorado Inmate Communication Overview
Colorado operates its state prison system through the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC). Phone calls from all CDOC state prison facilities are free and unlimited under House Bill 23-1133, which took full effect on July 1, 2025. Neither the inmate nor the person receiving the call is charged per minute or per call. Video calls are also available at no cost through the CDOC tablet program. You do not need to fund a prepaid calling account to receive calls from Colorado state prisons.
Even though calls are free, families still need to be on the approved contact list to receive calls. Video visits at CDOC facilities are scheduled online through Securus after being approved on the visiting list. Visitor approval is processed through CDOC's visitor registration system and takes two to four weeks. Background checks are required for adult visitors. Children under 18 must be on the visitor list and accompanied by an approved adult.
Colorado DOC mail requires the inmate DOC number on all envelopes. Photos must be 4x6 inch prints. Many CDOC facilities are located in Canon City and it is important to confirm which specific facility your loved one is at before mailing anything. For federal inmates in Colorado, ADX Florence is the federal Supermax in Fremont County. Federal inmates use CorrLinks for messaging and ConnectNetwork for phone calls, which are separate from CDOC systems and not free.
Are phone calls free at Colorado state prisons?
Yes. Phone calls from CDOC state prison facilities became fully free on July 1, 2025 under House Bill 23-1133. Video calls are also free through the CDOC tablet program. Colorado is one of six states including California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and New York to have fully eliminated phone call charges at state prisons. You do not need a prepaid account. Contact must still go through approved calling procedures.
Which provider handles video visits at Colorado state prisons?
Video visits at CDOC facilities use the Securus platform for scheduling after visitor approval. Apply for visitor approval through the CDOC visitor registration system online. What is the most common mistake Colorado prison families make?
