Residential Reentry Center
A Residential Reentry Center (RRC) is a halfway house operated under contract with the federal Bureau of Prisons where federal inmates serve the final months of their sentence in a community setting. RRCs provide transitional housing and support services to help people prepare for full release. Communication rules at RRCs are generally less restrictive than at federal prisons.
What Is Residential Reentry Center?
Federal inmates nearing their release date are often transferred to a Residential Reentry Center in or near their home community. At an RRC, residents typically have greater phone access, may be able to work in the community, and participate in reentry programming.
The length of time spent at an RRC varies by case. Families of federal inmates should contact the case manager as the projected release date approaches to understand whether an RRC placement is planned and which RRC will be used.
