Count

A count is a mandatory security procedure at correctional facilities where all inmates are physically located and accounted for by staff. During count, all activities including phone calls, visits, and movement are suspended until every inmate is accounted for. Counts occur multiple times per day at scheduled intervals. If a count comes up short, a recount is ordered and the facility may enter lockdown until all inmates are located.

What Is Count?

Correctional facilities conduct multiple counts per day to verify the location of every incarcerated person. Count times vary by facility but typically occur in the early morning, afternoon, and evening. During count, phone calls are unavailable which families may notice as a sudden disconnection or inability to receive calls at certain times.

If a family member suddenly stops receiving calls at a previously reliable time, the count schedule may have changed. Count times are not typically published for security reasons. Families learn the rough count schedule through their incarcerated loved ones.
