Snake River Correctional Institution

Snake River Correctional Institution (SRCI) is Oregon's largest state prison, operated by the Oregon Department of Corrections and located in Ontario in Malheur County in the far eastern corner of Oregon, along the Idaho border near the Snake River. Opened in 1991, SRCI houses adult male inmates at maximum security classification and is one of the primary long-term institutions in the Oregon DOC system. Ontario is a small agricultural city on the Oregon-Idaho border, and its location roughly 375 miles east of Portland and 60 miles west of Boise makes it one of the more geographically remote state prisons in the Pacific Northwest. The facility's distance from the Willamette Valley — Oregon's main population corridor — means most families rely heavily on electronic communication.

Communication at Snake River Correctional Institution follows Oregon DOC provider contracts. JPay handles electronic messaging, photo sharing, and money transfers. Families create a JPay account and add the inmate using their Oregon DOC number to begin correspondence. Securus Technologies manages phone calls and video visitation under the ODOC statewide contract. Oregon uses JPay for messaging and money and Securus for phone and video — these are separate platforms requiring separate accounts. Setting up a Securus account allows families to receive inmate-initiated calls and schedule video visits.

Ontario is in Malheur County near the Idaho border, about 60 miles west of Boise and more than six hours east of Portland. For Boise-area families in Idaho, SRCI is actually the closest Oregon state prison, accessible within about an hour's drive. For Willamette Valley families in Portland, Salem, or Eugene, the facility's distance makes regular in-person visits impractical, and JPay messaging and Securus video visits become the primary means of contact. Oregon DOC accounts carry over to any other Oregon facility if an inmate is transferred within the state system.
